Halifax Synagogues Get “Redecorated” — Province Responds with Shrugs and Tweets

HALIFAX, NS – Antisemitism is no longer whispered in Nova Scotia. It’s spray-painted across synagogue doors, shouted in rented arenas, and defended in university classrooms.

This weekend, three synagogues were defaced with swastikas and slurs. Canada’s Davis Cup tennis matches in Halifax had to be played behind closed doors because of “safety concerns” tied to the same groups cheering on hate outside the Scotia Bank Center, CBC report.

Meanwhile, Al Jones, professor at Mount Saint Vincent University and organizer of a recent rally, continues to launder antisemitism as “activism.” Parents are left to wonder: if you want your kids trained to mistake hate for social justice, MSVU has the syllabus.

The Premier Speaks

Premier Time Houston thundered condemnation, then quickly pivoted to reputation management:

“This is disgraceful. We have Jewish friends, and we’d like them to know that if one of them was really hurt, or worse is killed, people around the world will say bad things about Nova Scotia. And no one wants that kind of PR.”

Translation: Lives matter, but branding matters more.

Police Inaction: A Consistent Pattern

Hate in Halifax doesn’t just thrive; it grows like the veggies in the community gardens when there is no water use resetrictions. Police delays and indifference grease the wheels:

  • In June 2024, two lesbians were assaulted on Argyle Street, with video evidence. Over a year has passed. Still no closure.
  • Now synagogues are painted with swastikas. Police call it “under investigation.” Translation: wait until the paint fades.
  • Advocates say the message is clear: antisemitism and homophobia are safer in Halifax than the people they target. Soon they may be as safe as free speech in Utah.

Government’s Proven Toolkit

Nova Scotia rolled out its signature response plan:

  • Strongly Worded Tweets™ – written in 30 seconds, forgotten in 30 minutes.
  • Hashtag Campaigns™ – #NoHateInNS vs. actual hate in NS.
  • Graffiti for Good™ – retraining vandals to paint rainbows. Hate is fine, just colour-correct it.
  • Community Dialogues™ – muffins, coffee, and no consequences.
  • Police Patience Training™ – do nothing, but look like you might do something, but don’t.

By the Numbers

  • Synagogues defaced: 3
  • Davis Cup matches closed to fans due to antisemitism: 1
  • Hate-crime arrests: 0
  • Professors in Halifax Spewing Hate: 1
  • Universities not Investigating the Spewing of Hate to Students and the Community from a Position of Respect and Authority so the Univeristy does not look bad and risk losing $7.9M for Advacned Eduction and Additctions an Mental Health Clinic Development and $10M in Child Study Centre Expansion : 1
  • Assault on lesbians resolved: 0 (15 months later, still nothing)
  • Strongly worded statements issued: 7
  • Provincial budget for hate-crime enforcement: $0
  • Provincial budget for ribbon campaigns and social media posts: $145,000

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t just about antisemitism. It’s the Nova Scotia brand of crisis management.

Remember when the Province declared intimate partner violence an “epidemic”? The cure was awareness ribbons, pamphlets, and the groundbreaking policy of mandatory hug training (pending Canadian Tire coupon). Male survivors? Zero funding. Female survivors? Mostly ribbons.

Fast-forward to antisemitic vandalism and it’s the same genius formula:

  • Deny there’s a problem (unless Social Mediac notices).
  • Delay long enough for outrage to die.
  • Distract with a hashtag, photo-op, or extraordinarily windy ruse.

It’s the abuser’s playbook—only now it comes with podiums, muffins, and a communications team.

Nova Scotia doesn’t just fail to stop abuse. It’s perfected the art of abuse and intimidation through policy.

Closing Note

Nova Scotia “opposes” antisemitism the same way it “opposes” homophobia: with ribbons, hashtags, and statements that cost less than printer ink. Until one more window is smashed, one more couple is attacked, or one more synagogue is desecrated—then we’ll issue another tweet.
