NSBANS Special Notice: A Pause for Serious Reflection
Normally, NSBANS uses this space to rant about potholes big enough to qualify for their own postal codes, or to demand balanced budgets instead of billion-dollar boondoggles. But today, we set aside the satire — mostly — to address something deadly serious.
This past week, on September 10th, 2025, conservative commentator and free speech advocate Charlie Kirk was murdered while speaking on a U.S. campus. It was a horrific act of political violence. Whether you agree with him or not, no one should lose their life for speaking their mind.
What makes this tragedy even more striking is that the average Nova Scotian scrolling social media could watch the scene unfold in high-definition from several angles within minutes. Ordinary people saw it plainly. And yet — silence from Province House.
Only Independent MLA Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin spoke out, condemning the act and offering respect to Kirk’s family. The PC government said nothing. The NDP said nothing. The Liberals said nothing. Not a word from the Premier, the Opposition, or the government itself. It’s as if “political violence” has been placed on the official list of banned topics — right beside “balanced budgets” and “no new taxes.”
Respect to Charlie Kirk and his family. Respect to Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin for standing up when all others chose silence. And a reminder to every party in this province: when Nova Scotians can see the truth in HD on their phones in near real time, pretending it didn’t happen isn’t leadership. It’s cowardice.
To Charlie Kirk’s wife, daughters and family: Nova Scotians who value freedom of speech and the safety of public life stand with you in this time of unimaginable grief. May you find strength in each other, comfort in your community, and peace in knowing that Charlie’s voice and work will not be forgotten. His courage to speak openly has inspired many far beyond America’s borders — including here in Nova Scotia. Our prayers and deepest condolences are with you.
Back to ferry cancellations and bike-lane brawls tomorrow.
